When the kids were young, I mean really young, I used to tell them stories about the fairy rings that would magically appear out of nowhere around this time of year.
‘It’s a sign’ I would whisper pressing fingers to lips. There eyes would grow wide, look closer and whisper back ‘a sign of what Mummy?’
‘Ahhhh,Christmas is just around the corner and the fairies have held a meeting to discuss which children they should watch for Santa’s naughty and nice lists, see these are the seats they sat upon while the chief fairy reads out the names of all the children in the area and assigns each child to a fairy.’ I’d reply pointing to the circle of mushrooms.
I would smile, my heart melting at their innocence. Their faces would light up and then cloud over as they tried to remember if they’d been good or not.
‘Don’t worry’ I’d whisper, you’re on the good list….. so far’.
They’d look at me questioningly. ‘How do you know Mummy?’
‘Because my Grandma, your Nana, is great friends with Santa and she introduced me to him so now the fairies whisper in my ear to let me know they’ve been and you’re on the good list’. I’d say, totally straight faced.
They never questioned what I said. To them it was fact. I would watch them visibly glow with the secret knowledge that their mum knew Santa personally.
And so began the long trek of ‘being good’ to stay on that list. In the weeks to come I would only have to look at them and peace would once again descend on our house.
I could not have known then that I would feel even more joy on hearing my own boys, now grown, tell those same stories to their children. Now I get to see what my face looked like all those years ago. Now I get to enjoy the glow on the faces of my boys as they experience that self same moment with their kids.
Last night fairies visited us……
……and Elly immediately glowed then thought, ‘Have I made it onto the good list this year?’ and she’s 14 But shhhhhhh…… don’t tell her I told you, she has her street cred to think of LOL. Who needs Super Nanny when you’ve got Santa on your side?
